Your Progress Deserves Continued Attention

Personal growth doesn't happen all at once. Sometimes, understanding a concern is only the beginning. Follow-up sessions offer an opportunity to revisit your experiences, reflect on changes and continue working towards your wellbeing goals.

Whether you are practising new coping strategies, facing a fresh challenge or exploring something that has become clearer since your last session, your therapeutic journey can continue at a pace that suits your needs.

Small Steps. Meaningful Progress.

Every session can be an opportunity to reflect, learn and identify your next steps.

What Is a Follow-Up Session?

A follow-up session is a continuation of an existing therapeutic relationship. It allows you and your therapist to review what has happened since your previous session and decide what deserves attention next.

You can discuss what has improved, what remains difficult, what you have learned about yourself and any new concerns that have emerged.

The focus is not on achieving perfect progress. It is on understanding your experiences and working towards realistic, meaningful goals.

What Can You Work On?

Follow-up sessions can focus on different aspects of your therapeutic journey, depending on your current needs and previously agreed goals.

01 / REFLECT

Review Your Progress

Explore changes in your thoughts, emotions, behaviours and everyday experiences.

02 / UNDERSTAND

Explore New Insights

Discuss patterns or feelings you have noticed since your previous session.

03 / PRACTISE

Strengthen Coping Skills

Review practical strategies and explore how they work in daily life.

04 / ADDRESS

Work Through Challenges

Discuss setbacks, recurring concerns or difficulties that need further attention.

05 / ADAPT

Respond to Change

Explore new circumstances and adjust your goals or strategies when appropriate.

06 / PLAN

Identify Next Steps

Agree on practical areas to focus on between sessions.

Making Each Session Meaningful

Follow-up sessions can evolve as your needs change. A session may include some or all of the following, depending on what is most useful to you.

Reflect

Share important experiences and changes since your last session.

Explore

Understand current concerns, emotions and patterns in greater depth.

Develop

Practise or refine appropriate coping strategies and personal skills.

Move Forward

Identify helpful next steps and areas for continued reflection.

Who Are Follow-Up Sessions For?

Follow-up sessions are generally intended for people who have already attended an initial therapy or counselling session and wish to continue their work.

The focus may be on an existing concern, progress towards personal goals or a new issue that has emerged during the therapeutic process.

They may be useful when you want to:

  • Continue work started in an earlier session.
  • Review strategies you have been practising.
  • Explore concerns that remain unresolved.
  • Discuss changes in your circumstances.
  • Revisit goals and adjust your approach.
  • Plan ongoing support with your therapist.

Progress Is Not Always a Straight Line

Some changes may feel noticeable, while others take time to understand. You may experience improvements alongside moments of uncertainty or difficulty.

These experiences can become useful topics for reflection during therapy. There is no requirement to arrive at a session with everything figured out.

You don't have to measure your journey against someone else's. What matters is understanding your own experiences and working collaboratively towards goals that are appropriate for you.

Continue at Your Own Pace

Follow-up sessions are an opportunity to pause, reflect and continue building on the work you have already started.

Your needs may change over time, and your therapeutic goals can change with them. The process remains centred on understanding your experiences and identifying appropriate next steps together.
